Vintage Saks Fifth Ave Brass Trinket Box w/ Minaret Finial Lid – Pandaan c. 1968. This unusually shaped brass box was custom-ordered by Saks Fifth Avenue in the late 1960s just as the psychedelic era was triggering a revolution in culture and fashion. To go with Indian-inspired saris and dresses, Saks decided to also sell traditional Indian wares that could double as fashion accessories. To this end, a box designed to hold betel nuts became a trinket or jewelry box. In other years Saks sold versions of this box with a perforated top. These are sometimes listed as lanterns or cricket boxes. They are also betel nut boxes, known as paandan. Those boxes were stamped “India” along with a non-matching stamp that said Saks Fifth Avenue, indicating that they were bought from a supplier and then branded as Saks merchandise. This paandan stands out because it was clearly commissioned by Saks. The maker hammered tiny dots into the bottom to create a pointillist font that reads “Made in India” and then, with an inadvertent misspelling, “Saks Fifth Avnue.” The form of the box goes back centuries to the Mughal Empire, which lasted from 1526 to 1761. Intricately adorned and carved antique paandan with this same shape are in museum collections. The tradition of serving guests a mixture of betel nut leaves, lime and various powders continues to this day. The betel nut has a stimulant effect and the presentation in a spectacular box on a tray with many other implements is not unlike a tea ceremony. So sure, it’s just a brass box that might look nice on a shelf or dressing table. But it’s also an intersection of ancient and contemporary Indian culture, Western pop culture and the fashion world. The box is approximately eight inches high and four inches across. It has heavy patina, but can be polished to a shine if that is your preference.
