Offered for your consideration is a pair of vintage WILDER ENGINEERING 1502 Alnico magnet 8 inch full-range speaker drivers, USA-made c.1964. WILDER opened in late 1950’s Chicago and is best known for their guitar amplifiers. But, they got their start making high-end drivers for the homebuilt speaker market, which, as you know, was quite popular with hobbyists in the early days of high fidelity stereo. Though their early speaker drivers were very high quality, they were never a high-volume manufacturer and their name faded into obscurity over the years. Online information about WILDER is sparse, and only the most advanced vintage gear audiophiles know of them. This pair of WILDER full-range speakers was manufactured to the highest standards of the day. They feature heavy cast baskets with thick, crinkle-finish gold enamel and large Alnico magnets with attractive bell covers. Their sturdy textured cones have ancillary whizzer cones to enhance high frequency response, and attractive aluminum voice coil dustcaps tastefully emblazoned with a W logo. So, please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if these superlative WILDER full-range speakers should be yours. This pair of WILDER full-range drivers is in clean, outstanding condition. The sturdy paper cones are structurally perfect, showing just a few light marks they likely left the factory with, as pictured. Plus, the whizzers are in perfect shape and those dustcaps are flawless. Also, the surrounds are pleated, accordion-style textile material, treated for added durability and designed to be permanent. And, the baskets are in great shape as well with only a few light scuffs to the enamel, perfect aluminum product discs on top of the magnet cover bells, and they still even have their paper info tags on the rear flanges—model number 1502, and the other with TWIN STEREO UNITS; a nod to the whizzers—both remarkably well-preserved. In addition, these speakers feature large Alnico magnets in heavy cast pots under those attractive bell covers. As typical, there is some whitish oxidation on the pots, but it’s not visible with the bells on and is of no consequence, regardless. Lastly, the +/- terminals feature heavy-duty binding posts (maroon is positive) instead of the typical male spades that most used. Overall, these WILDER drivers are in amazing shape, especially for being at least 60 years old! Most importantly, they’ve been recently tested and sound amazing. They play strong with fast, detailed mid frequencies, good low-end for the driver size/type, and have highs approaching the threshold of audibility. Plus, I tested their DC resistance at a perfectly-matched 7.4Ω each, consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the baskets measure 8⅜” diameter, they stand 5”, and the four-corner mounting pattern is the same EIA-standard 5½” adjacent / 7¾” diagonal hole spacing used on US-made 8” drivers for decades. As pictured and described, this incredibly rare, superb condition pair of WILDER ENGINEERING 8” full-range drivers is offered to the discriminating buyer at a competitive price.
